Nested in the country side of Bastia and accessible by 20 minutes walk from the city centre, the oratory of Monserato shelters an extremely rare "Holy staircase". Only the most important cradles of Christianity bear this privileged insignia. The inhabitants of Bastia obtained it from pope Pie VII, who thanked them for their warm welcome reserved to 424 Roman prelates exiled to Bastia after having dared to oppose to Napoleon 1st. According to the tradition, the believers, who scramble up on their knees in a true spirit of contrition are absolved of all their sins. Besides the luxurious Holy staircase covered with velvet and with gilded wood, the oratory, decorated in baroque style contains a beautiful marble statue of the Virgin and Child dated from 1637.
