By sea or by air, here's a summer town that's within everyone's reach and at the centre of everything! To the west, villages bathed in gold, the vineyards of the Conca d'Oro and the Agriate Desert sublime immaculate beaches, or to the north the wild beauty of the Cape Corsica home to small fishing ports, secluded coves and Genoese towers, Bastia is well and truly surrounded. It's the ideal base, the perfect base from which to explore the whole of France. Haute-Corse and get a taste of the most authentic part of the island.
Surprise walks
On the heights, from one hamlet to another, treasures await you, eternal witnesses of a suspended time, beautiful reflections of life in the past nestling in the bends of mule tracks, in the old stones of wash-houses, fountains, wine presses and bread ovens, as well as religious buildings or some fortress that has become a paoline tower, all strongly linked to the Corsican land and spirit.
Just a stone's throw from Bastia's city centre, the hilltop villages of Furiani, Cardo, Town of Pietrabugno, Santa Maria di Lota and San Martino di Lota each in their own way, will tell you all about Corsica: from the Middle Ages and the Genoese, to island beliefs and pilgrimages, to the inhabitants of the interior, souls made to resist, builders of watchtowers, people and lords...
So, from walks to hikes, the Bastia region can be explored in the coolness of the chestnut trees, along the path of a mill lined with scrubland and endemic species, or as far as the old ice houses offering a panorama reserved exclusively for walkers.
Walk, breathe and see! Corsican nature is everywhere: from the mountains to the hills and all the way to the seaside, along strips of light-coloured sand or in the intimacy of small pebbled and rocky coves, all ideal for water games, ricochets, underwater discoveries and outings on pedalo, kayak, paddle or jet ski. You can even go surfing, kite-surfing or windsurfing when the wind invites you, as the Bastia region is perfectly exposed and configured for those who prefer to laze on the beach, as well as for those who enjoy water sports and aquatic activities supervised, if need be, by trained professionals and instructors.
Creative energy
Bastia, sunny, lively and open, is always on the move! As a candidate for the title of European Capital of Culture, on 16 June Bastia will be inaugurating the 6th annual Creazione, Mediterranean fashion and design festival highlighting the island's designers. And it won't stop there!
In July, it and its sister communes will be launching a season-long In Giru, an artistic journey signed by the street artist Julien de Casabianca. An invitation to discover the destination in a different way. From Genoese towers to Baroque churches, the region's emblematic buildings will serve as a backdrop for this inspired artist. An event worthy of a generous region, which will also take you on a musical tour of Corsica and the world from festival to festival throughout the summer.
Creazione and its masters of materials
After a two-year absence, the Festival Creazione will be held from 16 to 18 June, in the enchanting world of the Musée de Bastia, in the presence of actress Hélène Fillières and visual artist and film-maker Ange Leccia, respectively godmother and godfather of this 6th edition of the Festival.th edition.
The theme of this year's event is the five elements, and the spotlight will be on the island's designers, with their emphasis on slow made. No fewer than fifty artists, craftsmen and designers will be coming out of their workshops and gathering for three days in the halls of the Bastia museum to show you the very essence of their work in a friendly atmosphere: excellent local brands, expertise and technical skills, quality materials, must-have models inspired by local products... And of course, new collections in tune with the times, designed and manufactured with ingenuity and talent, favouring short circuits and recyclable materials! To pay tribute to these masters of materials and their products, the Bastia Intercommunal Tourist Office is organising an evening of concerts, fashion shows and entertainment in an idyllic setting: the Museum's hanging gardens, with its unique, dreamlike atmosphere. While the place du donjon, at the foot of the Governors' Palace and its drawbridge, is home to a space food lounge to continue sharing with the great family of Corsican creation, gathered here to show a beautiful part of its island. A must-see!
