Fez-Meknes and its wonders
With an unrivalled number of artisans, Fez-Meknes is today a veritable hotbed of millennia-old craftsmanship that is just as avant-garde. A hub of artistic influence and production with significant cultural potential, this part of Morocco is the guest of honour at Creazione 2023, an event held under the banner of Mediterranea.
It was destined that Fès-Meknès and Bastia would come together. For in these two Mediterranean regions, the arts and crafts and the fashion industry flourish as nowhere else, driven by master craftsmen who preserve precious, time-honoured techniques, yet who also know how to imagine, design and improvise…
This partnership is therefore not a recent development. It has grown out of repeated exchanges over the years and a shared desire for openness, discovery and innovation.
And to top it all off, a first: an entire region from afar, with its colours, its charm and its light, takes its place at the Mediterranean Fashion and Design Festival in Bastia, the island’s capital of creativity and culture.
Moroccan Enchantment
Under the Berber tent, by the light of Moroccan lamps, Creazione invites you to enjoy an enchanting interlude, centred on the works of artists from the Maghreb. From the exhibition space to the fashion shows, the festival also showcases sumptuous Moroccan caftans – masterpieces of embroidery and trimmings, crafted from brocade, that rich silk fabric embellished with patterns woven in gold and silver thread. These ceremonial garments have fascinated the West since time immemorial and have even become haute couture designs, sometimes verging on evening wear.
These marvellous sultan’s robes will not be the only items to tell the story of Fez-Meknes; leather goods, jewellery and footwear are also on display, whilst the carpets and tableware are simply stunning. From the cobalt blue of Fez’s glazed and varnished ceramics to the unique Meknesian art of ‘démasquinage’ – which involves inlaying silver, gold and copper wires into metal to create designs on vases, plates and incense burners, decorative patterns reminiscent of lace, Creazione promises you a veritable feast of colour.
In the presence of a high-profile Moroccan delegation, comprising representatives of the Chamber of Trades and the President and Vice-President of Fez-Meknes, as well as the Consul General of the Kingdom of Morocco in Corsica, Najoua El Berrak, Creazione 2023 is today, for the first time ever, showcasing the vibrancy of a region focused on the social and solidarity economy, and on sustainable, smart and inclusive tourism.
Just like its sister city, Bastia, a centre of arts and culture.
