From dawn onwards, the atmosphere is very special. The fishermen join their boats, the first cafés open and the regulars sit on the terraces. The morning light reveals the facades, the harbour and the still calm sea. It's the perfect time to see Bastia as it is, simple and authentic.

Sunrise over the Tuscan archipelago is a sight not to be missed. One of the most beautiful views is from the’Aldilonda, the promenade suspended above the sea. Five metres above the water, the path runs along the coast to the Old Port. The calm, the unobstructed views, the sound of the waves: everything invites you to slow down.

Arriving at the port, dominated by the campaniles of the’Saint-Jean church, we discover one of the iconic images from Bastia. The colourful facades, the boats, the terraces... This is often where the real encounter with the city begins. All you have to do is look up, observe the details, and imagine the centuries of history that have followed.

Urban musings

Bastia is the perfect place for a stroll. As you walk, you pass through different eras: that of the Lion Rock which used to make docking difficult, and the first steamships that announced the arrival of foreign travellers.

Since Old Port, the monumental staircase leads to the Romieu Gardens then to the Citadelle. The climb is an experience in itself. The gardens offer a shady break, and the upper town reveals a different face: narrow streets, discreet squares, hidden patios, the remains of the old prison with a view of the sea.

Le Governors' Palace and its hanging gardens offer a unique panoramic view of the north of France. Bastia. From the ramparts, the view stretches between the sea and the mountains. It's the perfect place to stop, breathe and admire.

Later, the city slowly comes to life. Lunchtime arrives, under the palm trees of the place Saint-Nicolas opposite the ferries, or in a small square in the old town centre. The afternoon can continue at your own pace: shopping in the pedestrianised street, a coffee break, the beach just a few minutes from the centre, or a trip to one of the nearby hilltop villages.
