The Chiurlinu pond nature reserve

Stretching over almost 1800 hectares between Furiani and Lucciana in the communes to the south of Bastia, the Etang de Chjurlinu was classified as a nature reserve in 1994.

This wetland, the largest in Corsica, straddles the Bevincu river and the Mediterranean Sea, and acts as a veritable «green lung» within the Bastia conurbation. As manager of this protected area, the Collectivité de Corse watches over this exceptional site and organises fun and educational tours to discover its biodiversity, through the 300 or so species of plants found here and the 240 species of fish, birds, amphibians, reptiles and insects that make up its fauna. Since 2011, the Fortin eco-museum, built during the Genoese era on the islet of Ischia Nova, at the heart of the reserve, has been showcasing the history of this unique site through a slide show that illustrates the range of species that inhabit it and the ancestral traditions of lagoon fishing.
