Remarkable island biodiversity
Corsica is a veritable sanctuary of biodiversity in the Mediterranean. Nicknamed the «Island of Beauty», it boasts an exceptional wealth of natural resources, with one of the highest rates of endemism in Europe. More than 2,800 plant species have been recorded here, nearly 200 of which are endemic, meaning that they are found nowhere else in the world. From the coast to the highest peaks, Corsica's flora evolves in layers, offering a mosaic of landscapes ranging from fragrant scrub to holm oak forests, laricio pines and high-altitude meadows.
The island is also home to emblematic species such as the Corsican mouflon sheep, the bearded vulture and Hermann's tortoise. This exceptional biodiversity is the subject of reinforced protection measures and contributes to Corsica's strong identity.
Experience nature: hikes, walks, observation
The Bastia region offers many opportunities to discover this unique biodiversity. Hiking trails, such as those in the Balcony Villages (Cardo, Ville-di-Pietrabugno, San-Martino-di-Lota, etc.), allow you to immerse yourself in unspoilt landscapes. Numerous lookouts, such as the recently inaugurated one at Campu Canicciu, offer breathtaking panoramas and ideal vantage points for nature lovers.
Respect for this environment is essential: the picking of certain plants is regulated, and it is important not to disturb the local fauna, particularly during the nesting season. In partnership with the Parc Naturel Régional de Corse (Corsican Regional Nature Park) and local associations, awareness-raising initiatives are regularly organised throughout the region.
