BIGUGLIA POND NATURAL RESERVE

Spread over the communes of the south of Bastia, over nearly 1800 hectares between Furiani and Lucciana, the Chjurlinu pond was classified as a nature reserve in 1994.

This wetland, the largest in Corsica, straddles the Bevincu River and the Mediterranean Sea, and serves as a veritable “green lung” within the Bastia urban area. As manager of this protected area, the Collectivité de Corse watches over this exceptional site and organises fun and educational visits to discover this biodiversity, through the 300 or so plant species listed on the site and the 240 species of fish, birds, amphibians, reptiles and insects that make up its fauna. Since 2011, the ecomuseum of the fortress, built during the Genoese era on the islet of Ischia Nova, in the heart of the reserve, allows visitors to discover the history of this unique site by means of a scenography that shows, like a slide show, the extent of the species that inhabit it and the ancestral traditions of lagoon fishing.
