Dedicated to the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, it was built between 1604 and 1619. It houses an extraordinary silver processional statue of the Virgin Mary dating from 1852.
This work of art, which can be seen in a niche on the right as you enter the sanctuary, is carried in procession through the streets of the town every 15 August.
The original décor, greatly enhanced in the 19th century, is dazzling in its opulence. Masterpieces, marble and polychrome wooden statues, marble and stucco adorn the old cathedral, a veritable jewel set within the Citadel. Note, curiously suspended from the vault on either side of the chancel, the ceremonial mitres of the bishops buried in the sanctuary’s crypt.
Please note that the large statue of the Assumption of the Virgin (19th century), situated above the high altar, is 2.60 metres tall and is made of papier mâché!
