Dedicated to the Assumption of the Virgin, it was built between 1604 and 1619. It houses an extraordinary silver processional statue of the Virgin dated 1852. .
This work of art, which can be admired in a niche on the right as you enter the sanctuary, is carried in a procession through the streets of the town every 15th August. The original décor, which was greatly enhanced in the 19th century, is dazzlingly rich. Master paintings, marble and polychrome wooden statues, marble and stucco adorn the former cathedral, a veritable jewel set in the Citadel. Note the ceremonial hats of the bishops buried in the crypt of the sanctuary, curiously suspended from the vault on either side of the choir. Note that the large statue of the Assumption of the Virgin (19th century) placed above the high altar is 2.60 metres high and made of papier-mâché!
