Cardo, the rocky promontory
Perched on a rocky promontory overlooking the heights of Bastia, the village of Cardo has all the distinctive features of traditional Corsican rural housing.
It can be stated that Cardo already existed in the Middle Ages, but its true origins are lost in the mists of time. Ancient Roman road, Genoese pivot and erected high up on a rocky buttress, the village enabled its inhabitants to be protected from barbarian attacks and above all malaria which was rampant in the plain.
The village will really grow in the 15th century and it's from its navy, Porto-Cardo, will be born Bastia.
Le 4 February 1839, the city of Bastia will propose attaching the village to its municipal territory. Cardo will then become a district of the city by Order of King Louis-Philippe, the 13 April 1844.
Take advantage of your visit to refresh yourself at the fountain in the square. At last century, Cardo water was sold by street vendors to the residents of Bastia.
Many walks are available around the village. Le waymarked hiking trail will allow you to discover the town's old icehouses («E Nivere»), dating from the 16th and 18th centuries, and splendid views over Bastia.

Former «E Nivere» ice houses»
The old ice houses, called «E Nivere», remind us of a once essential activity in the region. Before the arrival of the modern refrigeration, these buildings were used to conserving snow and ice collected in the mountains in order to use them during hot periods. Today, they represent a precious testimony to ancient know-how and the’local ingenuity the constraints of their environment.
